Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

We don’t bother to try to get respite because we know that there are more people with higher needs that don’t get anything. it doesn’t mean that we don’t need it, because we sure a hell do, but there is not enough funding to go around.

Our daughter turns 15 in a few weeks so we have 3 years of schooling left. Then what. There is nothing, no where for her to go, the way that Disability Services QLD run things there it is a bit like a chook raffle at the local pub as to who gets what funding.

There is no where for her to go, and what are we suppose to do then, the school holidays are bad enough, so how are we suppose to cope when there is nothing? The fact of the matter is I don’t think we can, it’s like the impending doom, you know it is going to happen and there is nothing that you can do.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
  • Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Support for families and carers,
  • Flexible in-home/outside home respite,
  • Crisis and emergency support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because there is extremely limited support for us dealing with this, and we save the government thousands and thousands of dollars a year because we just suck it up and cope. Yet, we provide more help and support to refugees. It is a complete and utter inequity that needs to be fixed NOW.
