Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Not yet applicable in South Australia!

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
  • Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support,
  • Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
  • Accommodation options,
  • In-home care and domestic assistance

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the Scheme as currently nothing adequate exists. I wish the Scheme in South Australia to firstly benefit Adult Disabled Individuals (once they have left high school), as currently early intervention services are provided and school age children also receive some benefits.

When my child left High School and I had to persue Day Option Services I was totally horrified as the services available. Even the buildings that the services were held in were totally inadequate and rundown. The only adequate provider was SCOSA - and even some of their Hubs were in need of funds for upgrading.

The most worrying situation is ageing parents……how are they going to provide adequately for their adult children when they are no longer able to provide the level of care due to their age and their children becoming bigger and harder to manage. There are currently no facilities for adults to go to once parents are no longer able to care for them at home. An aged care home environment is not the answer for young disabled adults.

(I could have easily ticked more than 3 support options that are necessary for the NDI Scheme to provide)
