Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
There is too much red tape and as a single person I do not qualify for many programs. Seem to fall through the cracks and the assistance that I need - i.e. lawn mowing/whipper snippering and general garden work I cannot find. Also the smoke alarm battery has been going off every ten seconds or so for around three months because I cannot get onto a chair to change it and I do not own a step ladder and my friends too have issues which prevent them from helping me.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Accommodation options,
- Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because I want more accessibility to services, I want to know that my future is in safe hands because my conditions are not likely to improve over time and the government seems to cut spending at the lowest end of income earners like welfare recipients.
