Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed. The “system” only works for a few. Leaving many families needs unmet, people with disabilities are left isolated, treated as lesser unvalued citizens, suffering mentally and physically. SHAME! Any meagre amounts of funding thrown at the disabled is soaked up by administration and people who make you feel as though you are asking them to pay for something unnecessary out of your own pockets, sometimes passing through several different ‘departments’ and people of authority before being allocated to the most important end user - crumbs! People feel as though they are unworthy of support or inclusion with the manner in which any little amount of funding is given. Society should be proud to embrace these worthy people, people with disabilites give so much and benefit anyone who bothers to support them. Supporting people with disablities creates employment, devolops empathy and educates the ignorant self obsessed. Society has a responsibility to protect and look after those who are less fortunate than themselves, in return they are given a community to be proud of. The system doesnt work and hasn’t worked for the past 18 years because we have not been able to access support, somehow we never ticked the right boxes. Oh …and which 3 features of the NDIS whill have the biggest community impact? ???Why only 3? Obviously ALL of them - !!! People with disabilities have many needs and each are individuals like NORMAL people!! Cant narrow it down to 3, thiis is an example of limitations given not choices.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Support for families and carers,
- Accommodation options,
- Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I am unsure of anything offered. I would like to see the fineprint. However anything would be better than the past 18 years of struggle, anguish, pain, loneliness, fights with departments, filling out thousands of forms, imbarassment, suffering, poverty, isolation…..
