Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

When had his accident, he wasn’t injured at work or in a car. The stress associated with having to fight for a package was an enormous strain on our already traumatized family.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
• Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services,
• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I’m hoping the NDIS will be less stressful for people who come after us. Although I have also heard horror stories of people dealing with the TAC and Workcover to get the assistance and home mod’s they need, I’m hoping this will be better run, and able to get disabled people working/back into the community more quickly. Only then did we feel like we were getting our lives back on track. It was awful feeling like we had been thrown on the scrap heap. Having secured a care package, four years on and I am back at work, our house is modified, and mobility is still improving with a superb physio.
