Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
There is such an incredible cost involved in chronic illness and the system is not set up to effectively deal with the consequences of disability, for example young people are in nursing homes and the elderly are terrified as to what will happen to their disabled offspring.
The sufferers who find themselves in these circumstances become marginalised due to poverty, lack of social inclusion, unemployment and deterioration in health due to inaccessibility to therapy or services. They often don’t have the knowledge or ability to find out how to gain this access.
The ironic thing and the bottom line about this issue is that this can happen to anyone at anytime in anyone’s life. People think it can never happen to them but were you in this position what would you want to for yourself or your loved one.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
- Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It is critical for the economy, humanity, and the importance of looking after the weakest in the community.
