Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The current disability system is unwieldy due to the following:-

• The admin processes for children with moderate to severe disabilities are repetitive, efficient and put the family through increased trauma -Accessing specialised equipment can take over one year by the time two different government bodies have processed fud=nding requests and then the family still has to find more money from a charity to top up the unfunded section of the equipment - a very unsatisfactory process
• Wait lists can be long to get in to specialised therapy centres. This has become longer since the centralisation of the Growing Stronger programme

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, More opportunities to participate in the community, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Employment support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the NDIS as it will give people with disabilities more access to their choice of specialised person who can streamline services, including equipment.
