Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
It doesn’t affect me directly but it affects many people around me - not havin access to equipment or care services that they need - which means they are disengaged from normal activities - carers, families and those being cared for. Funds for respite and essential equipment - wheel chairs etc - seem to be the biggest gaps.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- More opportunities to participate in the community,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Support for families and carers,
- Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Any suffering in the community affects me directly. These can be easy fixes if people have access to a proportionate amount of money depending on their need
- and that those needs be met suitably and adequately for engagement, making activity and goals, respite, and empowerment.
