Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The Department of Education has “removed” some of the funding that my son previously received to assist in him at school. The funding is allocated to the school and then they pool the funding and spread it amongst all those children requiring assistance. My son’s diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified A Typical Autism meant that the school received some funding, this has been reduced over the last 2 years and now I see that unless his father and I pay for the assistance he needs he will fall further behind his peers. He made wonderful achievements when he was receiving assistance from Kurrajong Early Intervention, however, it now seems that his progress has stalled.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community,
- Removal of age barriers to services for children
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Crisis and emergency support,
- Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It is time for change. Our children deserve a future.
