Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Limited access to equipment when needed. Having a growing child equipment needs to change with their growth in a timely manner – rather than ordering equipment 12mths in advance hoping it will be OK.

Respite from quality carers is difficult to obtain– our child needs in home specialized care – the cost is unaffordable and the battle to obtain funding ongoing. Carers save the country milllions of dollars they need to be appreciated for what they do and better supported and cared for.

Inequality in funding – disablitys that are media popular obtain so much more OR families telling stories via media– we shouldn,t need to beg for care, equipment and providing a comfortable and happy life for our child.

Discrimination in after school child care– there is none for a child with high needs, so we are expected to use our respite to cover work hours or pay high costs for qualified carers.

Lufting heavy equipment such as wheelchair into car as cannot afford modify car-

• what happens when carers are hurt from caring???

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I need my child to be supported in her life by a community that recognizes inclusive care to all. Everyone has the right to feel comfortable in life and to have the right to be able to feel a part of the community. My child deserves equipment that is suitable to her needs as she needs it , and should not have to be in pain/discomfort because of red tape. My child deserves her parents to be supported in her care with adequate respite and assistance, as this is a lifelong event for the family. My daughters family are the most important people in her life and should be given the support to continue the high level of care they give.
