Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
10 years ago when I moved away from the family support I had, I moved to a slightly smaller town and due to the nature of my Mild Intellectual Disability, I couldn’t get the support that I had in my home town. It would of been helpful, if I was able to continue to recieve similar support when I really needed the support.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- More rights for people with a disability,
- Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Life-skills,
- Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The current Disability services and our attitudes are not meeting the needs in the local community and Australia wide. So there for there has to be a broader understanding to not shut down existing Disability Support Agency’s that are working to meet those needs.
I hope that the NDIS does go ahead and that it isn’t just a grab for votes.
