Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

There is never any money that we can access for anything! They tell me my daughter is not disabled enough! They don’t have to manage day to day. Also there is so much change, for example, the current changes in employment providers. We just get a relationship established and then there is more change - thi does not work well for people with disability.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family,
• People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Employment support,
• Accommodation options,
• Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because I am hopeful it will give the people with disability/families dealing with these issues more say. I would like to see the time when the family is allocated an amount of money and given the freedom to access the support that really hits the spot for their situation. Our experience has been that an enormous amount of money is spent with infrastructure and staff who are willing to meet with us at any time but there is never any money left for services for our daughter.
