Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I have many friends with disabilities and it distresses me that they know exactly what they need but the funding is not there. Instead there is funding for things that are not needed or funding for people to find funding for people with disabilities. Yes it will be expensive but it will be worth the money if people with disabilities can then be fully involved in work and community.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Education support (technology/services/equipment),
• Support for families and carers,
• Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because it is wrong for the system to decide what it will offer disabled people, It is much fairer for disabled people to be able to choose the services and equipment that they need. That is the way the rest of us operate, we have a budget and we decide how to spend our money, knowing our individual needs.
