Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I am trapped in the cycle of poverty on the Disability Support Pension, DSP. There are not enough part-time meaningful employment opportunities that offer flexible working hours, 8 hours per week. There needs to be many more employment opportunities to be created within all levels of government and private business for people with disabilities especially in the area of universal accessibility in the urban environment. The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Better access to education and work opportunities,
- More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
- More rights for people with a disability
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Employment support,
- In-home care and domestic assistance,
- Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I am 41 years old and have struggled my whole life just to survive with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, MD. I need help from the government and the NDIS to live a more independent life in the community so that I can be socially included in education, employment, public housing and to be able to independently access public transport.
