Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The disability system fails to supply sufficient respite for families especially as disabled children become adults and parents age.

Parents with adult children with a disability have very little hope for permanent accommodation. The waiting lists are huge and those in line have little chance as emergency placements fill every available placement opportunity.

The current system simply cannot afford the accommodation needs that exist in the community.

The state must provide accommodation for adults who cannot look after themselves.

Parents and carers must have a minimum of respite care on a monthly basis.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Support for families and carers,
• Accommodation options,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

The current system simply cannot afford the accommodation needs that exist in the community.

The state must provide accommodation for adults who cannot look after themselves.

Parents and carers must have a minimum of respite care on a monthly basis.

Current funding make this impossible.
