Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
To be honest I am as yet coping ok with things but my diagnosis of MS brought home my belief that all of humanity deserve to have a life in the community and contribute to that community not just exist. My point is always no one asks to be born with a disability or to contract a disability during the course of their life. Everyone life is valid and because someone has a disability doesn’t make it less so. Further to this those that care for that person sacrifice a lot of their lives out of love for that person with a disability, we shouldn’t be punishing them we should be acknowledging the wonderful giving of themselves and support them.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- More opportunities to participate in the community,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Life-skills,
- Positive behaviour support and psychological services,
- Interpreters and other communication support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS because one never knows when we may need it, don’t think it won’t happen to you. I respect those living with a disability and those caring for those with a disability they are the bravest, courageous and steadfast people and we could all take a leave out of their books.
