Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My son is now in his late forties. Throughout his life we have been aware of the fact that had the spinal condition with which he was born been as the result of a car accident, some insurance cover would have provided some resources to help us cope financially, but we were on our own. We had to ferret out information about pretty scarce support services and try to contact other parents with similar problems to try to combine information.
Added to this were community attitudes to disability which were pretty 19th Century
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Employment support,
- Case management,
- planning and coordination,
- Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It is well past the time for those members of the community who have a disability to be given a fair go.
