Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

We were in receipt of the Better Start for my daughter with Cerebral Palsy. This came into effect when she was about 5 1/2. Thus we were only able to access it for a short period of time. My daughter can no longer access this program as she is over 7. The disadvantage of this initiative, is that all services have increased their prices significantly since the introduction of Better Start. As a result, now a lot of services are out of our price range, and we are unable to continue with frequent services that she needs. Instead, we have had to prioritise her therapies.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Better access to mainstream support and services,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Removal of age barriers to services for children

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services,
• Life-skills,
• Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I suport the NDIS because I feel that being a member of a community, we should provide support for everyone who is in need of it.
