Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I work at a major city public hospital where head injured disabled patients are left with so very few option(s) for their future needs to be met. They are admitted to the hospital with a minor injury/complaint and immediately the carer/family will not take them back and the patient is, effectively, homeless outside of occupying a hospital bed.

This is an appalling situation for a prosperous country and there needs to be a whole-of- Australia input to start solving some of their most basic of human needs.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• Better access to mainstream support and services,
• More opportunities to participate in the community

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Employment support,
• Accommodation options,
• Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

These people are individuals of Australia that deserve basic human needs to be met and support for themselves and their carers/family to fulfil their life’s goals and ambitions. They deserve the opportunity to choose where they should live, with the input of specialists, but ever mindful that it is not always possible but to be given a choice and support.
