Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have not utilised the system to date but expect to in the future. I am on the Committee of the HSP Research Foundation and from discussions with members one thing they wish to know are the services/options available to them for equipment and funding. This would indicate to me that it is too difficult for them to access this information and perhaps a clear message on where,what and how to access the information would be good.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
- Access to reliable information about support options
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Life-skills, Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because this is a necessary element (unfortunately perhaps) to support those with a need.
