Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
There is little recognition of Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia in Australia. I now live in the UK and work in this area. In the UK the Disabled Students’ Allowance is paid to students who have been diagnosed with a SpLD which povides for both tutorial support and support with Assistive Technolgy such as software programmes.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- Better access to education and work opportunities,
- More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Education support (technology/services/equipment),
- Life-skills,
- Employment support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support it because it is important to recognise people with disabilities. Australia is well behind both Europe and the US in supporting people with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.
