Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I feel very concerned about carers getting the assistance and respite which they need. I feel very concerned especially about children and minors who are caring for others with disabilities.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
e Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
e Minimising the number e of times people have to tell their story in order to get support, e Older parents and e families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
e Recreation and community access,
e Support for families and carers, e Case e management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
A society will be judged on how it treats its most vulnerable members. I can’t pretend to know all the detail of the scheme, but I want to support our government in making a National scheme to support disabled people, and their families and others who care for them, in an organised and orchestrated way into the future.
