Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The current sysytem doesn’t adequatley meet the needs of people with disabilites to initially meet their physical needs adn ultimatley to help them live dignified meaningful lives connected to their families and communites. People and families have to describe the worst possible picture of their situation and compete for limited funding, many miss out becuase their isn’t enough funding to support basic services for all people. This is an infringement of people’s basic rights and can result in young peopel being admitted to residential care with elderly people beacue they cannot get funding for services to help the reamin in the community.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- More rights for people with a disability,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Support for families and carers,
- In-home care and domestic assistance,
- Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I work within community services supporting people with disabilites to live in their homes and communities. Often we see people and families struggling to receive basic services and as a result leading limited lives of isolation with high levels of stress.
