Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

We need a system where you don’t have to paint the worst scenario to be able to get funding. I want to see a system where challenges are acknowledged but a person’s ability can be recognised because the support he/she requires is automatically afforded to them.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
• People with disability can choose who comes into their home, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Recreation and community access, In-home care and domestic assistance, Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I look forward to seeing a system that promotes more power, choice and control for people with a disability and their families. I fully support a system that is willing to walk along side a person with a disability to facilitate the life they wish to live rather then offering a program that a person with a disabilty has to fit in with.
