Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have been disabled for 30 years through illness, am mostly bed bound and have little financial assistance to help me access equipment, therapies or home assistance.
My brother in law is severely disabled with muscular dystrophy.There is much medical and other therapies he is unable to access through lack of finance. The NDIS would have been of immeasurable help to him and his family.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
- Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Accommodation options,
- Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the National Dsabilty Insurance Scheme so that in the future people who would now be left unsupported, living in poverty, with they and their carers marginalised and in desperate need of assistance will be supported financially to be able to access every help necessary.
