Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The present system is very disjointed and becomes very hard for some people to access/organize the needs of their disabled person.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
• Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Life-skills,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite,
• Crisis and emergency support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

With a disabled person in our family we are aware of how much of our family life revolves around this person. As he will never be self-supporting the National Disability Insurance Scheme will remove the question of his support when family are unable to provide it.
