Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Inflexible; time spent waiting for organistions to organise things;

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family,
• Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Accommodation options, Flexible in- home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

People with disabilities are living with their conditions and limitations and often know more about what they need for their particular circuumstance; so it is more satisfying for them to be able to identifyy and be involved in organising what assistance they need themselves. They may make some mistakes along the way. That’s ok, because we all make mistakes in life and learn from them. So a scheme which tailors assistanne to the individual needs and circumstances and the time frame in which this is delivered will add to quality of life for all.
