Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

MY husband is on a deispility support pension , however he is not able to access ttherapies that he needs eg physio as this is really cost prohibitive, as I work his pension is minimal and all of my wages go into keeping aroof overour heads. If he were elidgeable for the NDIS he would be able to acces physio of a back brace and other items to assist him in being able to work at least some of the week instead of being isolated in our home , which is in a rural setting. Because he has a physical disability and not an intellectual one his choices of supported iemployment and my access to respite are also limited. NDIS would enable us to access transport to get him to appointments, instead of me leaving pour 1 and only car with him for the day and costing us exrtra for fuel as he need sto drive me to work and pick me up.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
  • More opportunities to participate in the community,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services,
  • Employment support,
  • Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I have 3 reasons to support the NDIS , 1stly I work in the Disability sector and see the inadequacies daily in the services that are provided. 2nd My husbands has a physical diability and aMental health issues. 3rd my cousin had Mitocondrial disease which is debilitated and disableing and eventually fatal, and she would have acces to more of what she needs
