Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

A person with a disability often experiences the exclusivity of venues, in that they are often forgotten with no allowance for accessability. and the fact that public ttransport cannot be relied upon to be available for the journey to and fro.

For a young person especially this is very hurtful, and they often feel stigmatised by the community, which in fact is often the truth.

With my grandson, it has happened in the particular schools he has attended, where his needs are sometimes forgotten, and sometimes totally ignored- which means he has missed out on outings partaken by his school, he has had to sit on the sidelines at regular sporting activities with no effort to give him a chance to participate (even in a helping situation). This is a very painful lesson to learn when you are young.

My impression is that inclusivity is an incredibly important part of daily life for everyone, thiis is when people learn how to become a part of society and feel accepted.

My understanding of the United Nations Charter for the Disabled, ensures they have the same rights as everyone else.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Better access to education and work opportunities, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Recreation and community access, Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the NDIS because the existing system is random and is of no help to many people. I support the system because any one of us could have a serious accident and be left a pauper trying to pay for ones needs.

If the system is modelled on or combined with the Medicare system it will be a system that will care for those who are in need with all of us contributing.
