Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The (redacted) path to existing Service Providers is too narrow making access to Providers in other needed fields too much of an “old boys club”.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Education support (technology/services/equipment),
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

My wife (a long time quadriplegic) and I have been keen on the NDIS since its begining and even though it has lost direction since joining the rest of the political footballs in the field. In anyform ther NDIS should provide freeer access to a broader range of Service Providers instead of the present “refferal” system.
