Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Disability support should be consistent, not governed by who’s in power. Once a decision on the running of the NDIS has been made, no political party should have the right to stop, cancel, suspend or limit it.
After all, the person with the disability has it for ever - it doesn’t go away. And for families of people with disabilities, the struggle to support and to provide appropriate care will never go away. Neither should the NDIS.
So once it’s in - it has to be permanent!
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
- More rights for people with a disability,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Support for families and carers,
- In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I have watched my family, and the families of others with disabilities, struggle and sometimes split over the difficulty of meeting the needs of their children.
Remember - it isn’t just about supporting those with disabilities, it’s about supporting their families too.
