Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

As a physiotherapist I come in contact with a lot of disabled persons & am also involved with the sport side of disability. I have worked in the UK in a spinal unit & was impressed with the service they have in that country. I am amazed at the lack of facilities in this “lucky” wealthy country where they are treated like second rate citizens.

The politicians need to spend time with the disabled - live with one for a week to get a feel what it is like. They need to attend the wheelchair tennis in Sydney to observe the complete lack of facilities compared with the “normal” tennis tournament. The “normals” should be asked to donate some of their earnings to these wonderful athletes who have to put up with so much & yet they accept it all with a smile.

This is the problem - all disabled persons accept their fate with a smile, so the rest of the world think they are doing OK.

Wake up Politicians - these people have a lot to offer.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
  • More rights for people with a disability,
  • People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services,
  • Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
  • Employment support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I am only allowed 3 in each of the above categories - I need to tick all of them.

Why do I support the NDIS - because I think it is absolutely vital in a 1st world, wealthy. affluent country to support those that are not as fortunate as the rest of the population.
