Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Because much of the training and support has been undertaken by family there is no provision for support when on own. Because support isn’t ‘critical’ there is no assement or level of support need documented with DHS, it is hard to plan for the future, ensuring that there is maximum benefit for the person with a disability. Uncertainty and inability to plan for the future are key issues

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Accommodation options, In-home care and domestic assistance, Crisis and emergency support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Hopefully it will enable coordination of all of the supports available to the person with a disability so that they are maximized for the benefit of the person involved.

More certainty for the future.
