Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have to pay for my own hearing aids which cost between $3000 to $6000 each. Being a low income earner, this is not easy to afford a pair and often would put aside buying till I can afford it.
Also booking interpreters for financial meetings, family weddings and special occasions such as birthday parties, engagements, etc are not cheap and I would often go without the interpreters. This means I would get no or little information at these functions and as a result I have less understanding of controlling my financial situation and less ability to participate in the hearing community.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
- Better access to education and work opportunities
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Employment support,
- Interpreters and other communication support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS because I believe it will give me a greater ability to participate more in the hearing community and greater freedom of independence.
