Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

people need support to stay at home rather than being inappropriately housed in institutions. They would prefer to stay at home and need financial support to do so. It would lead to better quality of life and possibly return to some form of employment, even if only voluntary, to improve self esteem.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• People with disability can choose who comes into their home,
• People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Education support (technology/services/equipment),
• Employment support,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Helps equity for all Australians, people do not choose to be disabled, it often comes out of the blue, and there is not always financial compensation available depending on the cause of the disability. Many people feel discriminated against because they are disabled and if they are able to havse a better quality of life they can contribute to society in many different ways, voluntary or for financial gain.
