Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

No common or legislated system, so insurance is too high or too optional (many people think it will ne=ver happen totheir family) , it needs to cover every Australian, all the time. A civilised and affluence society should have a system in place to care for the disabled, from birth or the date opf teh disability - for life. The biggest fear for loving carers (often parents) is who will care for their loved one if the carers cannot. We need a system to reduce the financial stress - the disabled person and their carers have enough other stressors without finacial worries as well.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Support for families and carers,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

It is the most cost effective way to provide universal cover - it should be a part of / similar to Medicare - it should not be left to private insutance companies to rip off profit from the most fragile and vulnerable in our society - WE CARE for everyone
