Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My husband cannot work as a result of a build up of calcium on his shoulder joints, ligaments and tendons, it has created an arthritis which can be treated with either cortisone injections or surgery. To date, he has being in pain and unable to work and not recognized by anyone as having a disability for four years. He has seen the surgeon at Cairns Base and put on a three month waiting list four months ago. Until he has surgery, he has a temporary disability, would everybody just see his issue for what it is!
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support,
- Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Support for families and carers,
- Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I have the honor to work with young adults who attend a life skills hub where I am employed. I am passionate about their rights, the carers and families rights who support them. I also believe that each young person will be accepted into the community for who they are and what they can offer on their own merit.
