Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed. The current system doesn’t work well. We had to submit extensive requests for support for our child. It was exhaustive and had an effect on our financial, imotional, relationships and physical health. No family should have to go through that for basic supports. We are fortunate that we are literate, knowledgeable and assertive. God help those that arnt as they left with nothing. It is an unfair cruel system and our loved ones are suffering.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, More opportunities to participate in the community, More rights for people with a disability, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, People with disability can choose who comes into their home, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community, Access to reliable information about support options, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services, Accommodation options, Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS. Because we deserve a quality of life even though we have a child with a disability and he deserves access to the community to enable him to have self esteem and not be treated as an inferior person of the community.
