Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Time frames for maintenance on or in getting suitable equipment and services for people with disabilities within a reasonable time needs improvement to give quality of life. Accommodation available to support families for respite or appropriate living for when the family can longer support the disabled person at home is minimal. People with a disability have as much rights as everyone else.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• More rights for people with a disability,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Support for families and carers,
• Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

NDIS is supporting the families of, as well as the people with, disabilities. The scheme realises the diversity of support needed from maintaining or supplying equipment, to providing suitable accommodation and respite for the disabled person, to supporting the families with appropriate services. The scheme also realises how any support or service is needed immediately - not two, three, four months down the track.
