Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
After working in the sector for over 10 years I believe that it needs a complete overhaul. At the end of the day little or no service is reaching those who actually have the disability or those who care for those who have a disability. Almost all resources go to inefficient bureaucratic structures that are top heavy with poor quality managers and outdated management practices.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- More opportunities to participate in the community,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Support for families and carers,
- Accommodation options,
- Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support it because it treats all those in our community who have some type of disability equally, and recognises the rights of this long neglected section of our community to live with dignity among us.
