Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Our child needs assistance in every aspect of daily life. We worry who could possibly do this job when we are gone, and we do not want our only daughter to be burdened with the extremely hard task of caring for him. We need more time for our own goals and health and time to spend with our daughter when we are not being carers. It is impossible for my partner to re-enter the work-force in any more than a very casual basis because if he is sick with a day off school there is no-one else who can care for him. We also have equipment needs coming up, such as a transport vehicle, and the cost is well beyond our means.
Basically, we don’t know what will happen when he leaves school and how the burden of care can be shared beyond our over-taxed family unit.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Flexible in- home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because it gives greater financial assistance and allows allows families to make choices around what genuinely assists them in their task of caring for a person with a disability.
