Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

One has to navigate the many departments, organisations, etc to find what you need. Even then you will probably go on a waiting list.

If applying for equipment, you have to wait, get doctors’ letters, hope you’ve got to onto the right department and that Enable will fund the equipment for you.

All the equipment my daughter needs is expensive - electric wheelchair with head controls, a manual chair, commode, hoist, voice augmentative device, an accessible vehicle.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services,
• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

As a parent of a disabled daughter, I would count ALL of the above features and support services as essential. The non-disabled sector have these options as a given right.

The NDIS will give people with disabilities the same options as the rest of the community.

And I am very willing to have my income taxed in the same way as I pay the Medicare levy to fund the NDIS
