Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Not broad enough and simply not enough funding for people to have basic rights. This isn’t about luxury or extras this is about fundamental care and service - persons should not be begging for what many of us consider human rights.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Better access to mainstream support and services,
  • Better access to education and work opportunities,
  • People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Life-skills,
  • Support for families and carers,
  • Flexible in-home/outside home respite,
  • Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Consistency across the country, supported centrally and has the potential to maximise benefits for those in need. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get it right.
