Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

At present my 25 year old son , who suffers from Bi-polar 1 lives with my husband and I.

We have been looking for suitable supported accomodation for him for a while. So far, there does not seem to be any accomodation which caters for his needs.

Living with him can be very stressful at times.

He has not worked in 6 years and really only leaves the house for doctors visits.

We are 64 and 58 years old and can not go on looking after him indefinately.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• More opportunities to participate in the community,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Accommodation options,
• In-home care and domestic assistance,
• Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I am hopeful it will provide a variety of supports which will assist my son in living a fuller life than the one he is living now.
