Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Because my children are now 15 and 16 and the amount of assistance available for their lifelong condition of autism is severely impacted. Whilst they have definitely improved from intervention from professionals over the years when required now it it the family who has to pay for most of the help needed.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Better access to mainstream support and services,
• More opportunities to participate in the community,
• Removal of age barriers to services for children

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services,
• Life-skills,
• Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because as a full time carer I just want my children to reach their full potential like any other parent. The NDIS will give them a greater chance to realise this potential. They can potentially be contributing members of society and the NDIS will hopefully assist them in doing this. At the moment we have three years of special development school left and then we face many changes and challenges in making more decisions for our sons futures.
