Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Better access to education and work opportunities,
• More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Employment support,
• Support for families and carers,
• Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Persons with CHARGE Syndrome need different support services at different ages of their lives. Initially medical services are paramount followed by educational sevices. The opportunity to work become predominant aand finally accommodation services. At various times in their lives physchology and behavioural services are needed. The NDIS It will provide the opportunity for parents/carers to access these services knowing these support services are readily available to children of all ages instead of being concerned if the support services are only available to persons who meet certain criteria or due not qualify due to other criteria such as age restrictions of the child. It will provide persons in need of the services to access those services without a long time frame waiting for those services to become available to them, if at all. Acces to work opportunities will enable them to lead a more productive, fullfilling and happier lives than being in a home or service provider situation. These initiatives will ensure both parents/carers, and persons acessing the services, will be more content and happier with their lifestyle. Parents wil be happier because they know their child’s future is more assured, and the person acessing the work services will identify themselves with pther workers in the workplace thus leading to a more contented and productive lifestyle in themselves.
