Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The current patchwork disability system makes it difficult - if not impossible - for families to move interstate; without worrying whether loved ones can get the same level of support elsewhere in Australia. A national scheme will allow for an easier transfer of benefits across state lines, which can have important economic benefits to families who are moving for new work opportunities.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Better access to education and work opportunities,
- More rights for people with a disability,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Life-skills,
- Employment support,
- In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It is only fair and proper that all Australians have the same level of support when affected by disability. A national scheme will allow for a consistent scheme of assessment that provides quality support that can easily be recognized across state borders. Most professional qualifications have cross-border recognition, and so too should disability assessment.
