Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Why wouldn’t it work for my family and me? One where we support those who sometimes cannot speak for themselves - of course it will work. I am even happy to work longer to contribute to it.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• More rights for people with a disability,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services,
• Support for families and carers,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support it because my mother worked and struggled to raise 4 childrne on her own after my father left because he couldn’t cope with the stress that my eldest brothers (now 52 yrs old) disability had on our family. How much better our life coudl have been if it was in place.

I also support it as I have worked with families for more than 28 years from all walks of life, all shapes and sizes, varyign abilities and I know what a difference this will make to them and to the services who try to support them.
