Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The disability system is very hard work. You need to be able to stay totally informed and up to date in a system that is not used to good communication. Disability has been so underfunded over the years trying to get support for equipment or therapy is almost not achievable. My daughter also has complex communication needs and the system has really let her down in this regard both in funding and education to support staff who work with her has made life really difficult. I have had to be the main support and my time and efforts in the end were useless as I would just teach one person to use her devices and they would leave. In the end I gave up and so did she. It has been very difficult for our marriage and family relationships also. Our marriage has survived but not for the right reasons.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, More rights for people with a disability,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
  • Support for families and carers,
  • Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

The NDIS offers hope to a system that is now lost. It gives me hope for the future that my daughter and others will be cared for in a system that is fair and a system that cares. If the NDIS can deliver on accommodation, services, support for families and carers and equipment, early intervention and intervention throughout their lives what a total difference it will make to the person with a disability and their families and carers.
