Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Needs one on one care Not enough suitable specialised accommodation, or in total - demand far exceeds supply Not enough suitably trained carers in the system Currently not enough funding for disability carers/clients Quality of workforce needs upgrading and hence higher remuneration

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Support for families and carers,
• Accommodation options,
• Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because it directs much needed funds to the disabled without discrimination Because it provides a better welfare system for Australia overall Because the current system is too costly, cumbersome, inadequate and inefficient

The real challenge for the NDIS is that scarce funds will be absorbed by inefficient administration/management of the system as the system is probably undercosted already
